The Tippmann Custom ACT Platinum marker bears the new ‘Split Receiver design’ which allowed us simple and lightning fast access to the internal components of the marker, making the mods we performed a breeze. The internals themselves have been further simplified to improve reliability and ease of maintenance.

For such an inexpensive tippmann paintball sniper, this package certainly shows incredible attention to detail, from the new matte finish and porting on the barrel, to the picatinny rails and redesigned grip. Changes to the sling mount end cap also meant we were able to test a better range of sling configurations.

In terms of distance and accuracy, the 98 tippman paintball snipers do fall short of their highly lauded brethren, the A5 range. However, we found that installation of the ceramic and teflon coated 20″ Smart Parts tactical barrel improved results dramatically, providing accuracy we have not seen before from a marker at this price point.

The Verdict - Theres a reason the 98 Custom Tippmann Paintball Sniper as been so popular for so long. This is a high quality workhorse that has been brought well into the 21st century with some excellent additions. While it may lack some of the bells and whistles of more expensive sniper paintball markers, I think we’ll see this tippman paintball sniper package become one of the most popular around in coming years.

The other option we found most valuable was the e-grip, was just that bit more comfortable and ergonomically assisted consistent accuracy at the outer ranges of the weapon as well as comfort in a prone position over an extended period.

VERDICT: All up we found this package to be one of the best we’ve tested for the intermediate group, superb quality and astonishing value. While the range is not quite competitive with some of the $1000+ sniper models we’ve tested, this can be extended with the flatline barrel option and is still among the longest for any rifle in its price bracket. Combined with the overall acuraccy and build quality we have come to expect from Tippmann and the excellent value of the accessories bundle, this package is likely to be one of the most popular sniper paintball gun packages of 2008.
